Understand Direct Equity

What is direct equity?

Direct equity means buying shares in a company. Your outcome depends on its business performance, the price you pay and market conditions. Dividends may contribute to returns, but neither dividends nor capital growth are assured.

What to evaluate

Study the business model, revenue and profit trends, cash flow, debt, governance and competitive position. Compare valuation with earnings prospects and similar companies; a good business can still be an expensive investment.

Build a balanced allocation

Consider your financial goals, emergency reserves and ability to tolerate losses. Spread exposure across companies and sectors rather than concentrating on a single stock. Money needed soon may not be suitable for volatile equity investments.

Account opening and execution

Listed shares are held through a demat account and traded through a trading account. Complete applicable KYC and review brokerage, statutory charges and account terms. Keep bank and nominee information current and review contract notes and statements.

Risks and ongoing review

Share prices can fall sharply and capital can be lost. Company-specific risks, liquidity and market cycles can affect outcomes. Review holdings against your original reasoning rather than reacting only to short-term price changes.
